Grant us peace | Volume 14
Grant Us Peace – this Latin chorale, in Martin Luther’s translation, serves as the title of a commissioned composition by Michael Villmow for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Germany (Bundesjazzorchester) and its 10-member vocal ensemble. Young, vibrant big band music will be performed as part of the Reformation anniversary celebrations at prominent venues, including the Protestant Church Congress in Berlin, as well as in Dessau, Weimar, and Wittenberg.
At the heart of the project lies the musical setting and interpretation of selected texts and chorales by Martin Luther. The Bundesjazzorchester’s 10-member vocal ensemble is an integral part of the program. A fitting artistic director was found—someone with experience in composing, arranging, and conducting both big band and church music—to create something new and unique at the intersection of these two genres for the Luther anniversary year: Michael Villmow. A saxophonist himself, Villmow brings the ideal combination of training and many years of experience in composing for and leading both choirs and big bands.
