Concert tour highlights

Special concert tours of the Bundesjazzorchester in recent years.

Germany (EURO) 2024

90 minutes of joy, energy, team spirit, elegance, improvisation and precise playing thrilled the audience in the year of the European Football Championship EURO 2024, which took place in Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024. The Bujazzo was accompanied by Tom Gaebel, himself a member of the ensemble from 2000 to 2002. Under the direction of Ansgar Striepens, a mixture of Tom Gaebel's most popular songs, newly arranged football anthems and big band music for the football festival was performed in Emden, Dortmund, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Leipzig and Berlin.

Ecuador 2023

2023 marked the third visit of the German National Jazz Orchestra to Ecuador after 2014 and 2017. At the invitation of the German Cultural Association in Ecuador ("kultura"), the musicians presented the programme "A Tribute to the Clarke-Boland Big Band" from 29 September to 10 October in Quito, Riobamba, Cuenca and Guayaquil under the direction of Prof. Marko Lackner. This trip was made possible by additional funding from the Goethe-Institut, the services of a broad network of sponsors from the German Cultural Association in Ecuador and the musicians' own contributions.

Montenegro 2023

At the invitation of the KotorArt Festival in Montenegro and with the support of the German Embassy in Podgorica, the Bundesjazzorchester travelled to Montenegro from 11 to 15 August 2023. The ensemble gave three concerts there on 12 August at the "Wild Beauty Festival" in Zabljak, on 13 August at the "KotorArt Festival" in Kotor and on 14 August in the amphitheatre in Luštica Bay. Conducted by Niels Klein, the Bujazzo presented its current programme "Zukunftsmusik". This was the second visit to Montenegro after 2019, where concerts, workshops, talks and sessions with young musicians built the first bridges of friendship in this exciting region.

Israel & USA 2019

With the support of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community and the Federal Foreign Office, the Bundesjazzorchester presented the silent film programme "Sounding Utopias - 100 Years of Bauhaus" together with students from the Center for Jazz Studies at the Israel Conservatory of Music Tel Aviv in a mixed German-Israeli big band with vocal ensemble. The tour included concerts in Tel Aviv, Berlin, New York, Rochester and Chicago.

England 2019

In 2019, the successful big band project THREE NATIONS UNDER ONE GROOVE continued in the UK. Together with their Dutch colleagues from the Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (NJJO, Netherlands) and the British musicians from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO, United Kingdom), the Bundesjazzorchester completed an intensive rehearsal phase at the renowned Tonbridge School near London, followed by concerts in Bury St Edmunds, London and Northamptonshire.

USA & Canada 2018

With the support of the Federal Foreign Office, the Bundesjazzorchester travelled to the USA and Canada in 2018 with the Bauhaus project "Sounding Utopias". The journey included concerts at jazz festivals in Rochester, Toronto and Ottawa. The multimedia programme under the direction of Niels Klein was presented at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, the Toronto Jazz Festival and the Ottawa Jazz Festival. Rehearsals were held at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, where the Bujazzo musicians also took part in workshops and masterclasses.

Ecuador 2017

The German Jazz Orchestra was invited by the German Cultural Association in Ecuador (kultura) on a concert tour to Ecuador. The trip centred on the two anniversaries "100 years Colegio Alemán Quito" and "60 years Centro Cultural Ecuatoriano-Alemán Guayaquil". It was the second visit of the Federal Jazz Orchestra to Ecuador since 2014. Under the direction of Jiggs Whigham, the young musicians presented their programme "Edelhagen Remembered" in the cities of Guayaquil, Cuenca, Tena and Quito.

India 2016

In 2016, the Bundesjazzorchester travelled to the central west coast of India, to Goa, to rehearse and perform together with Indian musicians. The centrepiece of the trip was participation in the Western Music Festival ("Paschim Rang Festival") organised by the Kala Academy. In Goa, the young German jazz musicians met professional Indian musicians who accompanied them both as teachers and fellow musicians, including singer R.A. Ramamani and percussionist Karthik Mani.

West Africa 2013

In May 2013, the Bundesjazzorchester embarked on its first tour of West Africa. Under the direction of Mike Herting, the ensemble travelled to Senegal and Guinea-Bissau to rehearse and perform together with African musicians. The tour began with a ten-day workshop in Saint-Louis and a subsequent performance there at Africa's largest jazz festival.
